Neurodiversity explained with LEGO

Often, when people discuss neurodiversity with neurotypical people, the latter dismiss the concept with the claim that everyone's brain is different. Doing this however, misses the point of the discussion. A good analogy for this is LEGO.

Neurotypical

Neurotypical minds can be equated to the vast array of official LEGO sets. There are many franchises that LEGO works with, and each has multiple sets, and multiple generations of a particular set. This therefore equates that there is differences in neurotypical minds. These sets are mass-produced; a point that equates to the fact neurotypical minds are the majority population. These sets also come with straight-forward instructions, a point that can equate to an easier life and ability to fit in society.

Neurodivergent

Neurodivergent minds equate to a variety of things that are not the basic LEGO sets. Some could be an official set with missing pieces, either from the start or lost later. Some could have added pieces. Some may have missing instructions. Others could be the pile of mixed LEGO sets or a random LEGO piece pile. There are even more that could have a LEGO equivalent, but these are just a sample of the many possibilities.

Conclusion

As this demonstrates, neurotypical minds are not homogenous or in opposition to neurodiversity. Neurodiversity just addresses the minds that exist beyond the box or have issues in the box. Therefore, the argument that all minds are different is dismissive of the issues that are being discussed.
