Bashing at Hollywood

Many people like to bash on Hollywood for armour and weapon designs on the small or big screen. However, many people tend to forget that this was done in the past as well. For example, Medieval art depicting Biblical stories depict armour using what was contemporary to the artists and not what was actually worn before them (such as Roman soldiers in the Passion of Christ). With many of these stories that do not have a historical basis, armour is just a symbol for a warrior such as depicting Goliath in David and Goliath.

This use of contemporary armour and weapons also applies to more direct and secular stories of history such as with the Romance of Alexander.

However, thanks to archaeologists and historians of the modern world, Hollywood does have less of an excuse to use creative license than previous artists. It is acceptable for fantasy, but not as much for mediums depicting history.
